YJI’s very own Madison Hahamy '24 has been awarded the Rhodes Scholarship and will pursue a degree in Refugee and Forced Migration studies at Oxford. Congratulations!
Maddie has made a huge impact on journalism at Yale. She was the faculty and academics reporter for the YDN (she taught Isaac basically everything he knows) and was also a distinctive editor and writer at the New Journal. She was a Block Fellow at the Toledo Blade, recently worked on investigations for NBC and has bylines in the Tampa Bay Times, Columbia Journalism Review, New Haven Independent, Mississippi Free Press and a number of Jewish-focused publications, including Lilith, Jewish Insider and Hey Alma. Maddie, we wish you the best!

The Poynter Fellowship in Journalism will sponsor an in-person Q&A titled “Fair and Balanced”: A Conversation On Communication Across The Aisle with Jessica Tarlov. Topics may include her formative experiences in college, her tenure as a strategist for Doug Schoen, her views on bias in the media, her efforts to defend Democrats in front of millions on The Five, and her work to provide Fox News’ viewership with a liberal perspective on issues dominating the daily news cycle. NEW: Writing Comedy: Reading and Q&A with Rebecca Shaw ’18 and Ben Kronengold ’18 (link)

Ben Kronengold ’18 and Rebecca Shaw ’18 will read from their new book Naked in the Rideshare followed by a Q&A about comedy writing. Ben and Rebecca are 2018 graduates of Yale College whose viral graduation speech kicked off a comedy writing career that includes: Two years writing for The Tonight Show, a generational ensemble comedy in the works at FX (executive producer Nick Kroll), a second series sold to Peacock this year (EP Will Ferrell), and a third series in development with Ryan Reynolds. They also have a Michael B. Jordan action-comedy in the works at Amazon, which follows their debut feature script for DreamWorks Animation. Ben and Rebecca were highlighted on last year's Variety's Young Hollywood Power List and profiled in the New Yorker.

NEW: Also, at NewsGuard, a search for Hebrew and Arabic-speaking interns. As NewsGuard scales its efforts to monitor and report on misinformation coming out of the Israel-Hamas war, our team is seeking Hebrew and Arabic speakers interested in full or part-time internships with NewsGuard's editorial team. NewsGuard offers paid internship opportunities to current students (undergraduate and graduate) and recent graduates. Interns will produce detailed reports about the credibility of news and information sources, primarily sources written in Hebrew or Arabic, and identify and debunk false claims related to the Israel-Hamas war. Interns will also have the opportunity to analyze misinformation trends and assist in writing war-related reports, such as NewsGuard's most recent report that "Blue-Checked, ‘Verified’ Users on X Produce 74 Percent of the Platform’s Most Viral False or Unsubstantiated Claims Relating to the Israel-Hamas War." ABC News is looking for a Production Associate for its Political Unit leading up to next year’s elections. The ABC News Decision Desk is hiring a project hire production associate to work with The Decision Desk Team in preparation for the 2024 election cycle (Primaries and General Election). NBCUniversal is looking for a Desk Assistant at NBC News Washington. The NBC News Washington Bureau offers paid full-time Desk Assistants (D.A.) positions year-round. Our desk assistant program is intended for individuals with a strong interest in television journalism – specifically network news and cable news. The positions provide excellent opportunities to learn the basics of reporting and production by observing and working with some of the best, most experienced news professionals at a major news organization. The Arts Paper, the editorially independent news arm of the Arts Council of Greater New Haven, is seeking a parental leave hire to step in as both editor and reporter to cover New Haven's vibrant and kaleidoscopic arts community. As a reporter, you are able to crank out three to four articles per week that tell a story of New Haven including arts education in the city’s schools, concerts and exhibitions, arts funding at the city and state levels, cultural festivals, studio visits, and arts events that pop up at the 11th hour. As an editor, you are responsible for assigning, tracking, and editing 3-4 articles per week from the Arts Paper’s roster of freelancers, and managing those reporters as they write. Editing may include “angling” with reporters and outlining articles before they write, working with them if/when they need assistance and occasionally getting in the weeds with a gnarly rewrite.
You must have a commitment to anti-racism; previous newsroom experience strongly preferred. If you are not already based in New Haven or do not have a deep knowledge of the city, please do not apply. Some night and weekend work required.
The Seattle Times is looking for a Sports Columnist to join their team. This position helps frame community conversation around the Seahawks, Mariners, Storm, Kraken, OL Reign, Sounders, UW Huskies and other sports teams (likely including an NBA team in the coming years) while building reader loyalty through thorough reporting and lively and authoritative writing. You’ll write three opinion pieces per week – analyzing and critiquing teams, players and front-office/administration strategies – and you’ll produce occasional longer-form enterprise stories. The Sports Columnist reports to the Sports Editor. The salary range is $61,500 to $122,600. Find more information here.
Early-career jobs at the Information, a tech-focused publication: They have an editorial fellowship, a six-month position for early-career reporters. Harper’s Magazine is hiring for a full-time position: Assistant Editor to do fact-checking and production work. Responsibilities will include fact-checking, proofreading, and using InDesign to input copy changes and adjust layouts. Applicants should be highly organized and comfortable working within tight deadlines. The ideal candidate will be a meticulous editor with a keen ear for language who is familiar with the magazine’s history and style. Experience with InDesign is strongly preferred. The position is full-time and based in New York City. The salary starts at $43,264 per year, and the benefits package includes a generous health-insurance plan.
