The New Journal x St. A's – Beyond the Issue

Tuesday, Oct. 3 @ 5pm in St. Anthony Hall (483 College Street)

The New Journal is hosting a panel conversation exploring our September issue cover story “Lost Time,” featuring main sources Darrell Atkinson and Alexander Taubes, and the writer, Miranda Jeyaretnam. The discussion will delve into Connecticut’s commutation process and life after incarceration, followed by a Q&A portion.

Job fair w/ the Minneapolis Star Tribune

Tuesday, Oct. 3 @ 7pm on Zoom

The Minneapolis Star Tribune is once again hosting an internship and early career job fair, both a virtual and, new this year, in-person event! These are a chance to learn about opportunities in our newsroom while receiving one-on-one career advice from staff journalists, asking questions of our leaders and learning what makes a successful application. YJI EVENT: Reporting from Inside Xi's China: A Roundtable with Chun Han Wong (Wall Street Journal)

Tuesday, Oct. 10 @ 9am, in HQ 102.

Chun Han Wong has covered China for the Wall Street Journal since 2014. He was part of a team of reporters named as Pulitzer Prize finalists for their coverage of China’s autocratic turn under Xi Jinping. As a Journal correspondent in Beijing and Hong Kong, Wong has written widely on subjects spanning elite politics, Communist Party doctrine, human and labor rights, as well as defense and diplomatic affairs. Born and raised in Singapore, Wong is a native speaker of English and Mandarin Chinese. He studied international history at the London School of Economics, where he graduated with first-class honors and won the Derby Bryce Prize. Wong will discuss the human and technological challenges of reporting from inside Xi Jinping's surveillance state. Breakfast will be provided. This session is off the record. Ben Goldfarb – Crossings: How Road Ecology is Shaping the Future of Our Planet with Ben Goldfarb

Ben Goldfarb is an independent conservation journalist and the author of Eager: The Surprising, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter, winner of the 2019 PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award. His latest book, Crossings: How Road Ecology is Shaping the Future of Our Planet, has been supported by grants from the Alicia Patterson Foundation and the Whiting Foundation. His writing has appeared in numerous publications, including The Atlantic, Science, The New York Times, The Washington Post, National Geographic, Yale Environment 360, and many more. He holds a Masters of Environmental Management from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and a Bachelor of Arts from Amherst College.

A virtual opportunity to work with Robert Lee Williams, an incarcerated writer in New York: My name is Robert Lee Williams, I'm an incarcerated journalist, residing in Sullivan Correctional Facility, in New York. I'm a mentee of John J. Lennon, prison writer, contributing editor for Esquire and contributing writer for the New York Times. I'm also working with Reginald Dwayne Betts, Yale grad, MacArthur fellow. My work has previously been published by Literary Hub, the Prison Journalism Project, and PEN America. On Friday September 8th, 2023, I also made New York State History by becoming the first incarcerated New Yorker EVER to present at the 2023 Rise Up Conference about higher education in prison, or at any event, for that matter--LIVE! (via Zoom). I set precedent and paved the way for others. Click here and witness history. I'm looking to work with a volunteer and learn from some super smart people to help pitch stories, refine my writing, liaise editing rounds between me and editors, etc. This is how it would work: you would go to jpay.com, punch in my name (Robert Williams), DIN# (10A1230), and State (New York), allowing you to set up an email account. Then we could communicate directly. From there, I’d give you instructions on how to set up the phone service. I’d email you my pieces, you’d copy and paste them into a document. We'd have our own one-on-one editing rounds. In the process, we can learn from one another. When you pitch my pieces you’d be able to leverage my contacts and growing network. Early-career jobs at the Information, a tech-focused publication: They have an editorial fellowship, a six-month position for early-career reporters. The East Rock Record Journalism Project is looking for student employees: Led by New York Times journalist Laura Pappano, the project works with 25 students in grades 3-8 at the East Rock Magnet School each Thursday 2:30pm-4:30pm (www.eastrockrecord.org). Two positions are available on Yale Student Employment website: The Yale Journalism Teaching Assistant & Mentors (Job ID 15161) help students brainstorm, plan, report, and write stories for their school paper. Each year, 5-10 mentors join the program, meeting with students every Thursday 2:30-4:30pm. The Journalism Graduate Student Program Coordinator (Job ID 18705) provides support in all operational areas of the program, including overseeing undergraduate mentors, communications, special events coordination, managing social media and website, and more. Responsibilities will include fact-checking, proofreading, and using InDesign to input copy changes and adjust layouts. Applicants should be highly organized and comfortable working within tight deadlines. The ideal candidate will be a meticulous editor with a keen ear for language who is familiar with the magazine’s history and style. Experience with InDesign is strongly preferred.
